What is occupational therapy?
The aim of occupational therapy is to help people with physical or mental disabilities to maintain their autonomy in their living environment, through re-education, re-adaptation and rehabilitation.
Occupational therapy sessions include an assessment of the patient's physical and mental condition, goal-setting, activities of daily living (self-care, work and leisure) and other individual or group exercises, aimed at providing patients with essential learning to achieve greater independence.
Occupational therapist
With a master's degree in occupational therapy, occupational therapists assess patients holistically, observing and intervening in their occupations, environment and person. Our professionals also advise patients and their families on how to better integrate into their personal, professional and social environments.
When should you seek occupational therapy?
The occupational therapist can intervene to meet several objectives:
- Offer a treatment plan for work-related accidents (CNESST) or traffic accidents (SAAQ)
- Evaluate an elderly person's living environment and suggest exercises or adjustments to help maintain them at home.
- Evaluate and improve workstations to avoid or eliminate injuries (carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, etc.).
- Driving assessment
- And much more
Paratransit eligibility assessment
To qualify for this service, a person must receive an assessment from a health care professional confirming that his or her health condition limits his or her ability to get around on his or her own.
This limitation may be the result of a motor or intellectual handicap, a visual impairment or a disabling disease.
One of our occupational therapists will assess the person and complete the application form.
Functional and work capacity assessment - upcoming service
Functional capacity evaluation is an objective and meticulous analysis of a patient's functional abilities and physical endurance. Its purpose is to determine the patient's ability to perform his or her job, to assess his or her physical stamina and to identify any functional limitations with a view to developing a rehabilitation plan.
The functional abilities assessment can take place at Physiobalance or in the workplace, and is carried out by an occupational therapist and a kinesiologist. It provides an assessment of physical condition (measurement of body composition, aerobic and musculoskeletal aptitudes, lifestyle), functional work capacities (ease of carrying and moving loads, tolerance to different work positions, ease of movement) and overall endurance.
