How are concussions treated?

November 21, 2020 //  by Physio Balance

Concussions are serious business. So it's important to have the help of a specialized management team. Effective treatment also requires the help of a sports physician and neurologist.

In addition, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other health professionals are essential in the process. That's why, in this article, we explain how to treat concussion. With our experience and commitment, we're here to support you in your recovery.

Let's get started!

Definition of concussion

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects the proper functioning of the brain. Symptoms and effects are temporary, but can be uncomfortable depending on their intensity. In short, a concussion occurs after a violent blow to the head.

How can you identify the symptoms of concussion?

Symptoms usually include headaches, pressure in the head and changes in sleep patterns. However, they can persist for days or even weeks after the concussion.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to consult a doctor immediately. Of course, you should not resume your activities until you have fully recovered.

Repeating a head injury can be dangerous. In addition to being very painful, repeated concussions can lead to long-term problems. We therefore recommend that you exercise extreme caution in your daily activities.

What is the concussion management protocol?

Concussion management protocol varies from person to person. Some people may experience mild symptoms. However, others may require a longer recovery period. Of course, rest, good nutrition and exercise are important to help your brain heal.

It may also be necessary to limit physical activity and avoid any race requiring concentration. Why should you do this? Because this can trigger concussion symptoms all over again.

MPORTANT: Provided you have followed your doctor's advice, you should be able to gradually resume your usual activities.

Some studies on concussion

Although concussions can occur in any sport, they are more common in high school sports. We present below the results of 2 studies on this subject:

First study

A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics recently came to light. It indicates that nearly three-quarters of concussions in high school sports occurred during practice. This is certainly a very high rate, especially in a teenage population.

Second study

A CDC survey showed that a quarter of teenagers suffered a concussion in 2017. Likewise, one million reported two or more. Indeed, these are alarming figures.

My child has suffered a concussion. What should I do?

If your child has suffered a concussion, you need to start treatment as soon as possible. In other words, you need to seek professional help immediately after the accident. That way, your doctor can recommend a treatment plan.

Then you must follow the specialist's instructions to the letter. Only then will you be able to return to a normal life after the accident. However, you should always consult your doctor for follow-up and treatment.

You may also need to consult a physiotherapist. You should also enlist the help of a rehabilitation specialist to monitor your child's progress. Concussion treatment depends on the severity of the accident.

What should I do if I've suffered a concussion?

If you have suffered a concussion in an accident, you should seek medical attention immediately. The effect may be immediate, or the symptoms may appear later. However, the most important thing is to avoid driving after an injury of this magnitude.

Call someone you trust or go directly to the emergency room, if necessary. Similarly, you need to rest after a concussion. Your brain will need time to heal, so it's essential that you get enough rest.

Finally, you should avoid alcohol and caffeine during your convalescence. A doctor will undoubtedly recommend the best treatment for your condition. However, you also need to work together to recover quickly.
